چکیده

This paper is an introduction to the primary effects of herbicides on photosynthetic electron transport, photophosphorylation and pigment syn thesis. Herbicides are not known to have primary effects on transcription, translation or carbon fixa tion, and the inhibition of lipid synthesis by the thiolcarbamates will not be considered since it is not restricted to the chloroplast. We will be con cerned mainly with the primary biochemical elfects of compounds so far as they are known, since re ports of gross effects on whole plants do not provide leads which can be of use in seeking out new active herbicides. We will need to concentrate on the most recent developments; a previous review [1] considers the earlier work. Throughout we shall be empha sizing information that might aid the synthesis of new herbicides.

The combined effects of UV-B radiation and herbicides on photosynthesis, antioxidant enzymes and DNA damage in two bloom-forming cyanobacteria.

In this study, we investigated the combined effects of UV-B irradiation and herbicides (glyphosate, GPS; 2-Methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, MCPA-Na; 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea, DCMU) and the antioxidant (ascorbic acid, ASC) on photosynthesis, antioxidant enzymes and DNA damage in two bloom-forming cyanobacteria, Anabaena sp. and Microcystis viridis. UV-B irradiance increased reac...

Molecular Mechanism of Action of Herbicides

Herbicides are the most widely used class of pesticides accounting for more than 60% of all pesticides applied in the agriculture (Zimdahl, 2002). The herbicide’s mode of action is a biochemical and physiological mechanism by which herbicides regulate plant growth at tissue and cellular level. Herbicides with the same mode of action generally exhibit the same translocation pattern and produce s...

Phytotoxicity of Four Photosystem II Herbicides to Tropical Seagrasses

Coastal waters of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) are contaminated with agricultural pesticides, including the photosystem II (PSII) herbicides which are the most frequently detected at the highest concentrations. Designed to control weeds, these herbicides are equally potent towards non-target marine species, and the close proximity of seagrass meadows to flood plumes has raised concerns that sea...

Types of Selective Action by Herbicides which Inhibit Photosynthesis

Various sources are involved in the selective action of herbicides which inhibit photosynthesis, ranging from gross morphological differences connected with the availability of the herbicide to the foliar or root surface, to differential absorption, translocation and inactivation in the tissues of various plants species, and finally to differences in susceptibility at the chloroplast level. The...

Effect of Different Herbicides and Salicylic Acid Treatment on the Photosynthetic Efficiency of Corn Cultivars Using Chlorophyll a Fluorescence Transient Curve Analysis

Photosynthesis is an essential part of the plant function and metabolism and a number of herbicides inhibit certain photosynthetic activities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of some herbicides including Topik, Titos, Equip, Mister, Lumax, Bromicide and Oltima on the photosynthetic efficiency of three corn cultivars (CC-260, 400, 704) in response to salicylic acid (SA) treatmen...
